System Configurations

The GEM System has been designed to suit the needs of any size department. For larger departments, the system can be programmed to interface with a computer, increasing its ability to process a database into the thousands.

The system is simple to operate. The Incident Commander or Accountability Sector Officer simply switches the Command Receiver "on" and an instant accounting of personnel is begun. As personnel continue to arrive on the scene, the signal from their PASS devices are received and displayed, whether the PASS device is activated or not.

These spread spectrum radio signals are received and processed in a microprocessor built-in to the Command Receiver. The information is sorted and the personnel census and status is displayed on a Liquid Crystal Display screen in the lid of the receiver. The Command Receiver also features the control panel and a programming keypad.

An alarm condition can be transmitted either manually by pressing the alarm button, or automatically if the wearer remains motionless for 25 seconds. A 7-second pre-alert sounds at 18 seconds allowing the wearer to reset the device if he or she is not in distress. When this signal is received by the Command Receiver, three things occur:

A vocal announcement sounds indicating that a firefighter is in distress.

Two flashing lights on the lid of the Command Receiver indicate an alarm condition.

The name of the individual in distress is prominently displayed on the LCD screen.

Additionally, a relay connection within the receiver can be utilized to activate sirens, vehicle lights, or other audio-visual signals.

The GEM System Provides Instant Accountability
True Accountability For The First Time

These features allow the Incident Commander and/or Accountability Sector Officer to know immediately of the alarm condition and the identity of the person in distress.

The incident history can be automatically stored using software that interfaces through a standard RS-232 port in the command receiver. This means that the following information can be stored and retrieved from the PC interfacing with the command receiver:

  • The time each individual reported on the scene.
  • The time that each PASS device was activated.
  • The names of individuals who go out of range, and the time that this occurred.
  • The identity of an individual in alarm, as well as the time that the alarm condition occurred.

The GEM System is certainly the most revolutionary piece of life-saving technology to be introduced to the fire/rescue service since the advent of self contained breathing apparatus. With the introduction of this system comes, for the first time, the ability to immediately know what personnel are on the emergency incident scene as well as when a person is in distress.
